The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Nana Patekar, a veteran Hindi and Marathi film actor, died early on Thursday 8 October 2026 at his home in Goa. He was 75. Mixed · 2Reports say he suffered a cardiac arrest and was declared dead at 5:20 am. Dr Shekhar Salkar of Manipal Hospital told the news agency ANI that 45 minutes of continuous CPR failed to revive him. Mixed · 2The Daily Mirror, citing sources, says he was at home with his nephew Prasad, had complained of a headache, and was later found unconscious; The National says his family had yet to release a statement.

Centre · 1His son, Malhar Patekar, confirmed the death. According to Gulf News, citing The Indian Express, Malhar said his father died of natural causes and that he himself was travelling from Pune to Goa. Mixed · 2The death has been registered as a medico-legal case, and a post-mortem examination was expected on Thursday. Mixed · 2Born Vishwanath Patekar in Murud-Janjira, Maharashtra, he made his film debut in "Gaman" in 1978. His breakthrough was "Parinda" (1989), which won him the National Film Award and the Filmfare award for best supporting actor.

Mixed · 2He later won the National Film Award for best actor for "Krantiveer" (1994) and a second supporting-actor National Award for "Agni Sakshi" (1996). He also directed "Prahaar" and found a new audience as the comic gangster Uday Shetty in "Welcome" (2007). Left · 1Variety reports he received the Padma Shri in 2013, served in the Territorial Army, rising to lieutenant colonel, and in 2015 launched the Naam Foundation to support drought-hit farmers in Maharashtra. Centre · 1Tributes came from across film and politics. Riteish Deshmukh called him "the sky of acting", Ram Gopal Varma called him "the GOD of acting", and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also paid homage, Gadkari citing his foundation's water conservation work and support for farmers' families.

Mixed · 2Coverage also notes the allegation by actress Tanushree Dutta, who accused him in 2008 and again in 2018 of harassment on the set of "Horn 'Ok' Pleassss"; her accusations helped spark India's #MeToo movement. Patekar consistently denied them. Mumbai police filed a closure report in 2019, which Dutta disputed. Centre · 1The BBC reports that police said in 2019 they had found insufficient evidence against him; it also notes he was outspoken in criticising governments and ministers.
