The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Alan Ritchson's action film Runner, directed by Scott Waugh and also starring Owen Wilson, moved to premium video on demand (PVOD) on October 13 after a modest theatrical run. Centre · 1By its fifth weekend, Collider reports, the film's theatrical footprint had shrunk from 2,568 theaters to 78. Centre · 1Collider says Runner has grossed around $18 million at the box office against a reported budget of $45 million. It puts the film in the same budget bracket as recent Jason Statham films and says it matched the domestic box office of two of them, Mutiny and Shelter.

Centre · 1Angel Studios, which is trying to expand beyond its faith-based roots, distributed the film domestically. The film follows a Good Samaritan who teams up with a courier to deliver a liver to a dying girl while gangsters chase them. Centre · 1Collider notes that Ritchson has yet to deliver a big-screen hit despite his streaming popularity. His two theatrical releases this year, Motor City and Runner, played well with target audiences but did not break out. It adds that Motor City has found some success on PVOD. Centre · 1Collider cites an 89% Rotten Tomatoes audience score and a 77% critics' score as reasons the film could do well at home.

Centre · 1Screen Rant, citing FlixPatrol data, reports that a day after release Runner was the 7th most-watched movie on the Apple TV Store's US Top 20 Movies chart. It called the result an instant success. The movies ranked above it included Practical Magic 2 (2nd), Buddy (4th) and Hope (6th), all released digitally the same day, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day led the chart. Centre · 2Both outlets place the film against Ritchson's wider career: Reacher has finished its fourth season on Prime Video, and Netflix's War Machine is one of its biggest hits. Screen Rant adds that Reacher has been renewed for seasons 5 and 6, and that Ritchson's Christmas comedy The Man with the Bag arrives on Prime Video on December 2.
