The story, neutrally told

Top seed Alex Eala of the Philippines lost her Asian Games singles semi-final 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to China's Wang Xiyu on Thursday 1 October. Eala, ranked 18th in the world and aged 21, goes home with a bronze medal. Eala led 5-0 in the first set before Wang recovered, levelled in the second set and broke serve early in the third.

Wang served out the match to love at Higashiyama Park Tennis Center and will face compatriot Zhang Shuai in an all-Chinese final. The result is a blow to Eala's hopes of direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Eala skipped the China Open to play in Nagoya; Al Jazeera reports that this may bring a WTA fine and ranking penalty.

After the match Eala said Wang was more consistent and that they would discuss the ups and downs of the match with their team. Eala also went out of the women's doubles in the second round, partnering Shaira Rivera.
