The story, neutrally told

Left · 1Michael and Susan Pretti, the parents of Alex Pretti, spoke publicly for the first time since their son was fatally shot by a federal agent in Minnesota in January. Left · 1At a news conference on Tuesday, they said the federal government had kept them in the dark for 275 days, even after they wrote to Attorney General Todd Blanche over the summer asking for basic information, including the identities of the officers involved, and they demanded the release of all evidence. Left · 1Alex Pretti was a U.S. citizen and an ICU nurse who was shot by immigration officers in Minneapolis nine months ago.

Left · 1Michael Pretti said, "At every turn, they have ignored us, misled us and shielded Alex's killers," and Susan Pretti said they were "begging for the Department of Justice to do what is right." Left · 1Justice Department spokesperson Kiersten Pels told NBC News that communications between federal officials and victims' families "do not typically occur" during an investigation and usually come later, such as at indictment, plea, trial or sentencing; the Department of Homeland Security referred questions to the FBI. Left · 1The family's lawyer, Steven Schleicher, said they are entitled to see the evidence under the Crime Victims Rights Act and asked, "What are they hiding?"

Left · 1Nearly a week earlier, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said the federal government had stopped sharing information with Minnesota authorities investigating the killing; her office sued the Trump administration in March to obtain evidence in the Pretti and Renee Good killings and the wounding of Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis. Left · 1Minnesota officials said in July that federal authorities had begun handing over evidence, including body camera video; Moriarty now accuses them of withholding it, and DOJ attorneys have moved to dismiss the suit, arguing they may decline to share information when no formal legal proceedings are underway. Left · 1The shootings took place during "Operation Metro Surge," after the administration deployed more than 3,000 immigration officers and agents to Minnesota.

Left · 1The parents said videos of the shooting haunt them but contradicted the administration's account; Susan Pretti said the federal government "lied about Alex" and that they want to clear their son's name.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.

Framing
Both outlets lead with the parents' complaint that the federal government has not contacted them; NBC adds the DOJ response and the Minnesota evidence dispute.
Emphasis
The family's quotes, the lack of federal communication, and the lawsuit over withheld evidence.
Leaves out or plays down
No right-leaning or centre coverage in this set, so the administration's account of the shooting is represented only by a DOJ statement on communication practice.
Charged language
