The story, neutrally told

Centre · 1Spain midfielder Alexia Putellas was presented with the 2026 Ballon d'Or Feminin on Monday 26 October in London. Centre · 1It is her third win, after 2021 and 2022, and equals the record of Spain team-mate Aitana Bonmati, who won in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Centre · 1The prize has stayed with Spanish players for a sixth consecutive year; the only non-Spanish winners in the past eight years were Ada Hegerberg (2018) and Megan Rapinoe (2019).

Centre · 2The winner is chosen by an international panel of journalists. According to the BBC, Barcelona striker Ewa Pajor came second and Manchester City forward Khadija Shaw third. Centre · 2Putellas, 32, captained Barcelona to Champions League glory in 2025-26 before joining Women's Super League side London City Lionesses in July. The BBC describes Barcelona's season as a quadruple, while CNA calls it a treble. Centre · 1The BBC says she scored 21 goals and gave 13 assists in all competitions, including seven Champions League goals, and carried much of Barcelona's creative load while Bonmati missed five months through injury.

Centre · 1The win follows a career-threatening anterior cruciate ligament injury in 2022. In June she scored twice in a 4-0 win over England that secured Spain's place at the 2027 World Cup. Centre · 1After 14 years and 38 trophies at Barcelona she left when her contract expired and joined US billionaire Michelle Kang's London City project; she has three goals and one assist in seven WSL games. Centre · 1In her acceptance message she told children: "if you love football and if you want to play football, play football. It doesn't matter if you're a boy or if you're a girl." The BBC also reports that England captain Harry Kane won the men's Ballon d'Or.
