The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Amazon confirmed on 7 October that it had cut what it called a small number of jobs, primarily in its Stores unit, which oversees the main e-commerce website. Centre · 1A person familiar with the matter said Amazon let go fewer than 1,000 white-collar workers; Business Insider reported the layoffs earlier. Centre · 1A spokesperson said in an emailed statement: "We've adjusted parts of our Stores business because we believe this structure will better enable us to deliver on our priorities."

Centre · 2The cuts coincided with Prime Big Deal Days, the shopping promotion that ran on 6 and 7 October, and Gulf News said staff learned of them on 6 October by email. Centre · 2Posts on an internal Slack channel, shared with Reuters by some affected employees, suggested that customer service and selling partner services were among the divisions involved, possibly with other units across Amazon; Gulf News also cited reports naming marketplace support and engineering roles. Centre · 2Employees in the US, India and the UK received notices; Gulf News noted that in India the timing coincided with the start of Amazon's Great Indian Festival sale.

Centre · 2The cuts are the latest in a series of small reductions since a round of 30,000 job cuts that began last year and continued into January; Gulf News said Amazon confirmed 16,000 of those corporate cuts on 28 January. Centre · 2Founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos said in a Fox News interview aired 7 October that continued cuts were necessary because the company overhired during the pandemic. Centre · 1Gulf News linked the cuts to Amazon's plan for record spending of $220 billion on data centres, chips and infrastructure for AI. It said Amazon has not given a per-country breakdown or said whether more cuts are planned.

Framing
Both centre outlets report the confirmation as a small, targeted restructuring in Stores, timed with peak sales events. CNA, which carries Reuters reporting, leads on the statement and the sub-1,000 figure. Gulf News adds regional (India) timing and links the cuts to AI spending.
Emphasis
CNA: the spokesperson statement, the source's headcount figure and Bezos's overhiring explanation. Gulf News: the India sale timing, the $220 billion AI spend and open questions about further cuts.
Leaves out or plays down
CNA does not mention AI investment or the 16,000 January figure. Gulf News omits the sub-1,000 estimate and the spokesperson's statement.
