The story, neutrally told

Bloomberg reported that John Ternus, Apple's new chief executive, wants the company to launch products more often than around its traditional fall and spring moments. Bloomberg says Ternus has indicated Apple must move faster and be more experimental to stay competitive in the AI era. The Verge notes the shift may not happen right away given Apple's long-established development practices.

Apple's hardware engineering division has cut engineering program managers over the past two weeks; IJR says this reached roughly half a dozen directors, while The Verge says "a number" of managers were dismissed. IJR reports that affected staff were given weeks to find other roles inside Apple or be laid off later this year. Ternus is also considering removing some middle-management positions to reduce layers between engineers and senior executives.

Both outlets say Apple put on hold a plan to lay off 5,000 AppleCare staff, and IJR adds that the company believed AI agents could handle the work. IJR adds that Ternus, 51, succeeded Tim Cook in September 2026, and that he is working with Eddy Cue and CFO Kevan Parekh on growing services revenue. The Verge lists rumoured products in the pipeline, including a new HomePod Mini, iPad Mini, touchscreen MacBooks and a 20th anniversary iPhone.
