The story, neutrally told

Left · 1Apple opened preorders for the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, at 8am ET on Friday 16 October 2026, with a starting price of $1,999 for the 256GB model. Left · 1The Verge reports that the Duo has a 5.4-inch outer screen that unfolds to a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display. It uses the A20 Pro chip, has Touch ID instead of Face ID, an IP68 rating and a 48-megapixel fusion camera, and comes in Star White and Night Sky. Left · 1It was unveiled at Apple's "Surprise and shine" event alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. It can be preordered from Apple and Best Buy ahead of a 23 October release.

Left · 1AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon announced preorder promotions, including trade-in credits of up to $1,200 at AT&T and up to $1,000 at T-Mobile, and a waived activation fee at Verizon. Mixed · 2Within an hour of preorders opening, delivery estimates on Apple's website slipped to late January 2027 for every configuration, according to The Verge. Bloomberg, carried by The Straits Times, says the estimates moved within minutes and applied to both colours and all storage sizes from 256GB to 2TB. Mixed · 2Bloomberg reports that some customers saw delays even after reserving their colour and storage size in advance, and that Apple retail stores almost instantly ran out of launch-day stock. The Verge instead notes that Apple typically holds back some units for in-store sales, so buyers might get one sooner in person.

Mixed · 2The cause of the delay is not confirmed. The Verge suggests high demand, low supply or both. Bloomberg describes "strong demand and sharply constrained supply". Right · 1Bloomberg adds that Apple shares rose 1.8% before the market opened. It says the Duo is among the first major launches under chief executive John Ternus, who took over in September. It also cites a Counterpoint Research estimate of about 6 million Duo sales in 2026.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
