The story, neutrally told

Bloomberg News reported on 30 September, citing people familiar with the matter, that Apple plans to launch a new smart-home hub on October 13. The hub is expected alongside the first HomePod mini update since 2020 and the first new Apple TV set-top box since 2022. According to the report, the hub has a roughly 6-inch display and comes in wall-mounted or countertop versions.

The Verge, relaying Mark Gurman's reporting, adds design details: a metal round base housing speakers and microphones, a metal arm holding the screen, a USB-C power supply with no battery, and a gray aluminum finish. The hub is said to recognise individual household members and personalise content and responses using their data and accounts. The new HomePod mini and Apple TV are reported to keep their current designs but get faster processors to support Siri's more powerful AI models, following June's Siri overhaul.

The hub's software is reported to use iPad-like apps and to support controlling other smart devices, video calls, music, photo slideshows and intercom-style calls. CNA, carrying Reuters copy, notes that Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment and that John Ternus became CEO earlier this month.
