The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Apple announced a redesigned iPad Mini on Monday 26 October, its first with an OLED display, which is 8.5 inches, up from 8.3 inches on the previous model. Mixed · 2The announcement came just days before Apple's "Pro and Tell" event on Wednesday, and Computerworld and Bloomberg (carried by the Straits Times) describe it as the first of a week of launches, with an M6 MacBook Pro and iMac and a first touchscreen MacBook Pro expected. Mixed · 2The tablet is powered by an A20 Pro chip, which Apple says brings major performance, graphics and AI gains, including up to 60% faster multithreaded performance and up to 4.5 times faster AI performance than the previous generation.

Mixed · 2It is thinner and lighter than its predecessor, at 5.4mm thick against 6.3mm and 0.58 pounds against 0.66, and has an IP67 water and dust resistance rating. Centre · 2The display offers peak brightness of up to 1,200 nits, more than twice the previous generation, and a nano-texture glass option; Apple also calls the speakers placed under the display an "Acoustic Display". Right · 3Other changes include a 12MP front camera moved to the long edge for landscape video calls, Wi-Fi 7, faster charging, and Midnight and Starlight colour options; cellular models use Apple's in-house C2 chip, a first for an iPad, according to Bloomberg.

Centre · 2The Wi-Fi model starts at $699 for 128GB and the cellular model at $849; Computerworld lists $799 for 256GB and $999 for 512GB. Centre · 3The starting price is $100 above the previous model's current price of $599 and $200 above the 2024 model's original $499; ZDNET and Computerworld link the rises to memory-chip costs, and ZDNET says Apple raised iPad and MacBook prices in June. Centre · 2Preorders begin October 28 and the iPad Mini goes on sale November 6.

Centre · 1Dave Pakula, Apple's vice president of hardware engineering, said the new model is "a huge leap forward for users who love having the full iPad experience in the palm of their hand". Mixed · 2Outlets differ on details of the chip variants: Bloomberg and 9to5Mac (cited by Computerworld) say the 128GB and 256GB models use a binned A20 Pro with five CPU cores, while the top 512GB model has six cores and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. Centre · 2Criticism noted so far includes the price rise, a reported lack of 120Hz refresh rate that Apple has not confirmed, and the need to buy a 35-watt adapter for fast charging; ZDNET's reviewer also regrets the retention of Touch ID but plans to buy one.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
