The story, neutrally told

Pole vault world and Olympic champion Armand "Mondo" Duplantis said on Friday 2 October that he will skip the entire 2027 indoor season, including the European Indoor Championships in Valencia. In a statement, the 26-year-old Swede said the decision was meant to give his body the recovery and preparation it needs so he can perform at his best on his return. He said his focus would be on the 2027 outdoor season, which runs from early May to the World Championships in mid-September.

Duplantis described 2026 as a fantastic season but one with an overly demanding summer competition schedule, saying he had too much going on and not enough time to prepare. CNA reported that Swedish Athletics announced the decision. He withdrew from the Brussels Diamond League final as a precaution because of recurring tightness in his leg, then won the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest with a clearance of 6.20 metres; Arab News (AFP) gives the date as 11 September.

He is a two-time Olympic and three-time outdoor world champion and improved his own world record to 6.31 metres this year; CNA says that came in March. CNA also noted setbacks: he lost at the Stockholm Diamond League in June to Australia's Kurtis Marschall, his first defeat in three years, then won in Paris three weeks later without improving his record, and took gold at the European Championships in August.
