The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie and midfielder Martin Zubimendi were both injured in a session held straight after Saturday's 2-1 Premier League win over Leeds at the Emirates Stadium, and neither took part in an open training session on Monday. Centre · 2Hincapie came on as a substitute late in the game (the Evening Standard gives the last eight to ten minutes; CNA says the 82nd minute) and was carried out of the session; Zubimendi was an unused substitute. Centre · 2Both are doubts for Tuesday's Champions League home match against Lille, though one Standard report says they have been ruled out.

Centre · 1Manager Mikel Arteta said both players have ankle injuries and were due scans on Monday to establish how long they will be out, and that Hincapie's injury "looks a little bit more serious". Another Standard report describes Zubimendi's problem as a knee issue. Centre · 2Arteta said the session was not a typical warm-down but a training session planned for players who had not had enough minutes, and that "in two very unfortunate actions, we lost two players". Centre · 2Arteta defended the approach, saying that if players never train they do not get injured but then have no rhythm when needed, and that it had never happened in his seven years at the club.

Centre · 1He said he would not stop such sessions, noting there is contact in small-sided games, that such injuries did not happen once last season despite about 37 of them, and that he would ask players not to "touch each other too much". Centre · 1Hincapie's absence could leave Arteta a decision at left-back: Riccardo Calafiori has started every league match but no games in other competitions, and Myles Lewis-Skelly could move from midfield. Centre · 1Arsenal were already without Christos Tzolis (hamstring) and William Saliba (back problem), while Ezri Konsa and Kai Havertz returned against Leeds.
