The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Artists Equity, the company run by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, has launched Artists Equity Independent Pictures (AEIP), a banner dedicated to platforming emerging filmmakers in the indie space, Variety reported exclusively. Mixed · 2The banner is backed by an independent theatrical film fund. Jennifer Westin, senior vice president of creative affairs and production, will lead day-to-day supervision of the slate under Amy Baer, Artists Equity's president of film and television. Mixed · 2In a joint statement, Affleck (CEO) and Damon (chief content officer) said they owe much of their careers to independent cinema and that AEIP is a way to "empower rising voices with real potential, broaden the type of stories we're telling and serve an audience" wanting high-quality independent films.

Mixed · 2Early projects include "A Woman in the Sun", the directorial debut of "Nyad" screenwriter Julia Cox, with Renée Zellweger, Sissy Spacek and Mia Threapleton; and "Downriver", directed by Sam Jones from a script by Carl Hiaasen. Left · 1Variety lists AEIP's producers as Seth Caplan, Dori Rath, Hungry Bull Productions' Joseph Restaino and Groundswell Productions' Michael London, and says Affleck's thriller "Animals" arrives on Netflix on Oct. 9, with Dwayne Johnson's "Free Byrd" to follow from Artists Equity. Mixed · 2Affleck, Damon and Gerry Cardinale of RedBird Capital launched Artists Equity in 2022; its first film was the 2023 drama "Air".

Centre · 1In a separate Variety interview quoted by Collider, Affleck said he had been reluctant to discuss the company because he did not want its perception limited to him and Damon, and described the company's model of compensating writers, directors, actors and producers as if they were investors, plus performance-based crew bonuses negotiated with Netflix.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
