The story, neutrally told

Centre · 1US singer-songwriter Ashe says her hit "Stop The Wedding" came from feelings she had on her second wedding day in Nashville last October, when she recalled her first marriage almost a decade earlier. Centre · 1She told the BBC she had called her first marriage "horrifying" and described her ex-husband as emotionally manipulative and psychologically abusive. She said she had been tempted to call that wedding off but felt powerless to stand up for herself. Centre · 1On her second wedding day she felt the opposite, saying she is in a happy, healthy relationship with total autonomy over her own life. Two months later the song came out of that idea, in which she urges her younger self to trust her instincts.

Centre · 1The song was released in August. The BBC reported that this week it became one of the 10 most-played songs in the world on Spotify and on Friday entered the top five of the UK singles chart. It is also widely used on TikTok to highlight relationship red flags. Centre · 1The BBC profile traces Ashe's career. She is a San Jose native who studied at Berklee and worked as a Nashville songwriter, and she broke through with "Moral of The Story" in 2019. She had a nervous breakdown in 2023 and stepped away from music, returning with the 2024 album "Wilson". She then formed The Favors with Finneas O'Connell and signed with Atlantic Records. Mixed · 2Her fourth solo album, "The Girl of Your Dreams" (the BBC gives the title as "Girl of Your Dreams"), is due out on 16 October. The BBC describes it as deliberately maximalist, and it ends with a song about her current partner, musician John Clark Canada.

Left · 1CBS News interviewed Ashe on why "Stop The Wedding" is the first single from the album. The interview covered her work with Finneas and her finding empathy for herself.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
