The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Asians who share a name with one of the men accused of raping a US university student have faced a torrent of online abuse, AFP reported. Centre · 1The alleged 2024 gang rape of a Cornell University student, detailed in a recent lawsuit, has caused outrage against the seven accused men, and internet sleuths have searched digital footprints to track them down. Right · 1One of the accused is a Korean man identified by US media as Winston Lee, a common name, and people who share it, some living outside the US and looking nothing like the accused, have been targeted.

Mixed · 2One wrongly identified man is a Chinese American New York finance professional who, per his LinkedIn profile, graduated from Cornell in 2020, four years before the alleged rape; he received messages saying "Your future is over" and that he would be gang raped in prison. Right · 1In a TikTok video whose bio reads "Not part of Cornell7", he said he had hired a lawyer to press charges against a woman who posted his phone number and his parents' address online. Centre · 1An Indonesian man posted a TikTok appeal saying he was not the Winston Lee in the case, and a Chinese-American University of Pennsylvania student named Winston Lee added "I do not go to Cornell" to his LinkedIn profile.

Mixed · 2The appeals did not appear to slow what Reddit boards called an "online hunt"; one Reddit post claimed Lee was serving in the South Korean army and an X user cited tips that he had been seen on Cornell's campus, though few details about the accused man are verified. Right · 1People with names like the other six accused also reported spam and threats, and podcast host Brad Polumbo said such matters should go through "the criminal process or through some sort of fair process, not through a social media mob or witch hunt". Centre · 1Former Cornell students from the same Chi Phi fraternity, who graduated before the alleged incident, said through their lawyer Adam Ford that they were wrongly accused online, received death threats, and in most cases saw employers or schools take adverse action, including placing them on leave.

Right · 1Researcher Mike Rothschild said misidentification can generate false leads and hinder real investigations, and that the wrongly accused are often hounded, sometimes going into hiding or being attacked, with no penalty for those who accuse them wrongly. Centre · 1The SCMP version adds that all seven accused deny the allegations, saying their interactions with the woman were consensual or that they were not involved, and that prosecutors have reopened the investigation, with Governor Kathy Hochul appointing state Attorney General Letitia James to lead it after local authorities declined to prosecute in 2024 because the complainant's testimony did not establish a lack of consent.
