The story, neutrally told

AstraZeneca announced a $2bn investment in US drugmaker Summit Therapeutics on Monday 28 September, alongside plans to collaborate on cancer treatments. Summit shares surged in after-hours trading; City A.M. put the rise at more than 15 per cent. The partnership will test Summit's ivonescimab, a PD-1/VEGF bispecific drug, alongside AstraZeneca's antibody-drug conjugates, according to STAT.

City A.M. said Summit licensed ivonescimab from Chinese drugmaker Akeso. City A.M. reported that AstraZeneca is buying shares at $18.36 each, an 18.6 per cent premium to Monday's $15.48 close. The deal is expected to complete at the end of the week and would give AstraZeneca a 12 per cent stake in Summit, City A.M. said.

Summit co-chief executive Dr Maky Zanganeh called it the start of "an exciting new chapter", and AstraZeneca's Susan Galbraith said it could enable regimens that "raise the bar for patients with cancer". AstraZeneca shares rose 1.4 per cent in early trading on Tuesday, and last month fell six per cent in a day after reports it was considering a $400bn merger with Bristol Myers Squibb, City A.M. said.
