The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2A nurse was killed and another health worker severely injured after being attacked while responding to an Ebola alert in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Mixed · 2The attack took place on Saturday in the town of Bafwasende in the eastern province of Tshopo, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a post on X on Sunday. Centre · 1Tedros said everyone working to protect communities from the disease must be able to work in dignity and safety, and that healthcare must always be protected.

Left · 1The WHO regional director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Yakub Janabi, also condemned the attack on X, saying misinformation and fear must never fuel violence. Mixed · 2Local authorities have not yet commented on the attack or on any suspects. Centre · 1The attack is the latest in a series that authorities say is hampering efforts to slow what is described as the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak in the world.

Mixed · 2The health ministry's latest data show more than 9,800 cases, including more than 4,700 deaths, since the outbreak began in May, making it the deadliest Ebola outbreak in the country's history. Mixed · 2Earlier violence includes the beating to death last month, in North Kivu, of a Congolese politician who had publicly defended the government's response and urged people to follow measures such as social distancing and handwashing, and two attacks in one week in May in which angry residents set fire to tents at health centres. Mixed · 2Responders cite widespread distrust of the government, linked to its handling of past outbreaks and to chronic corruption, and scepticism in which some residents dismiss Ebola as a hoax; they say this complicates work in remote areas and hotspots already short of supplies and staff, and that some teams have been held captive or threatened.

Left · 1Al Jazeera adds that the outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, which has no approved vaccine or specific treatment, has been reported in four countries, the widest geographic spread of any Ebola outbreak on the continent. On Sunday Uganda's health minister, Chris Baryomunsi, announced a 21-day quarantine for citizens returning from the DRC, and the WHO has advised against travel or trade restrictions.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
