The story, neutrally told

Avengers: Endgame Encore, a re-release of the 2019 film, was the No. 1 movie in America over the weekend, grossing $26 million. The re-release adds new scenes that connect Endgame to Avengers: Doomsday, which opens on December 18. IndieWire reported that $13.5 million came from screens carrying Disney's new "Infinity Vision" designation, which was 52 percent of the box office from 43 percent of the screens.

IndieWire describes Infinity Vision as a Disney certification for screens meeting its audio and visual standards, and not a specific format or IMAX. It says Doomsday will not play on IMAX screens because they are reserved for Dune: Part Three, which opens the same day. Disney's head of theatrical distribution, Andrew Cripps, said it is the first outing for the brand and that long-term expectations are still evolving. Den of Geek said one added scene, showing the multiverse collapsing at the Time Variance Authority, is critical to Doomsday according to director Joe Russo, and argued viewers should watch Loki season 2 to follow it.

Screen Rant said the new scenes undercut the finality of Endgame's original ending. It also said one of them, revealing Doctor Doom forging his mask, has divided fans. Screen Rant's columnist concluded the changes were probably worth it for Marvel because Doomsday needed stronger links to earlier films.
