The story, neutrally told

A 4-month-old girl was found dead in a dumpster in South Los Angeles at about 10:30 p.m. on Monday 28 September. The New York Post, citing Fox LA, says a resident taking out trash noticed a heavy black bag, first took the contents for a doll, then realised it was an infant; CPR was attempted. The Independent says paramedics took the girl to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The infant's 19-year-old mother was detained on Tuesday morning; the Independent names her as Takiyah Babers and says she was arrested on suspicion of murder. The Independent says she is held on $2 million bail and that police will present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office; the Post says no formal charges had been announced. The outlets differ on the family's relationship to the mother: the Post calls Herman Johnson and Laura Lacy the baby's grandparents, while the Independent calls them Babers' foster parents.

The baby was named Luna; the Post says the family suspected her because the dead infant had six toes on her left foot, a trait shared by their granddaughter. Johnson said the mother gave inconsistent accounts of the baby's whereabouts, according to the Independent; the Post says a photo she showed was from an old video. Authorities have not disclosed how the infant died or a motive; the LAPD Abused Child Unit is investigating and the medical examiner is working to determine the cause.
