The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said on the BBC that a former IRA member has pleaded guilty to threatening to kill her, and that the messages were sent to her family as well as to her. Right · 1The Daily Mail says this was the first time Badenoch had spoken publicly about the threats, in an interview on the BBC's Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg. Right · 1The Daily Mail names the man as Kieran Kyle, 43, who it says admitted last month to two counts of sending communications of an indecent or offensive nature to Badenoch and her family. It says he will be sentenced on 29 October.

Right · 1According to the Daily Mail, Westminster magistrates heard that Kyle wrote to Badenoch: 'When I was in the IRA I would have shot you f****** dead.' It also reports that he sent an email using racist references to Badenoch's husband Hamish, and that he said she would be left in 'a ditch with a bullet in her head'. Mixed · 2Badenoch said threats against politicians are increasing, citing Nigel Farage and Keir Starmer, whose home was firebombed, and said 'we just need to crack down on this'. Mixed · 2Badenoch said getting the threats was 'really tough' but that 'you just have to get on with it', adding that the cumulative effect of abuse puts many people off politics and that she would not be put off.

Mixed · 2The comments followed the charging on Friday of Joshua Kerry, 28, with preparing acts of terror against Reform UK leader Nigel Farage. The Daily Mail says Kerry was charged in July with the murder of Ann Widdecombe, 78, a former Tory minister and Reform spokesman. Right · 1The Daily Mail adds other context: Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said abuse of her father while he campaigned for her in 2024 made her question her future in politics, and Katie Amess, daughter of Sir David Amess (murdered in 2021), questioned whether anything had changed. It also notes two Ukrainian men were jailed in June for conspiring to carry out arson attacks for Russia on property and a car owned by then prime minister Sir Keir Starmer.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
