The story, neutrally told

Right · 2The National Legal and Policy Center, a Washington, DC-based group, has filed a nine-page bar ethics complaint against New York Attorney General Letitia James over her comments on the "Cornell 7" case. Right · 1The complaint, filed with the Attorney Grievance Committee of New York State Supreme Court, says James should recuse herself or be removed from the case. Right · 1It centres on a Sept. 28 post on X, two days before James was appointed special prosecutor to reopen an investigation into an alleged 2024 gang rape at Cornell University's Chi Phi house, in which she wrote that "What this young woman has been forced to endure is horrific and unacceptable" and "We stand with you."

Right · 1The complainant argues the post showed whose account James believed before investigating, and that this violates New York's rules of professional conduct. Right · 1Legal ethicist Jack Marshall, whose expert witness report was included with the complaint, called the violation "flagrant, obvious and therefore shocking" and said the statement "raises suspicion of a rigged, pre-determined and illicit investigation." Right · 2Two of the accused men, Winston Lee and Gillio Lopes, have separately filed court documents asking that James be removed, saying she had already concluded the defendants are guilty.

Right · 2At a Thursday-night attorney general debate against Republican challenger Saritha Komatireddy, James said her comments "demonstrate empathy" and that "Politics stops at the door in my office." Right · 1A spokesperson for her office said the office is committed to a review of "nothing but the facts, the evidence and the law." James has been tasked with investigating the events of Oct. 19, 2024 and, if warranted, presenting evidence to a grand jury.
