The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2The BBC has commissioned a two-part documentary about author J.K. Rowling, tentatively titled "J.K. Rowling". Mixed · 2It is being made by Rogan, which Deadline calls Rogan Productions and Variety calls Rogan Scotland, and will cover her "dramatic rise, cultural influence and contested legacy". Centre · 1According to Deadline, the first episode covers the creation of Harry Potter and the success of the wizarding universe. The second examines her interventions on Scottish independence, feminism, free speech and gender identity, which Deadline says put her at the heart of increasingly bitter online exchanges.

Left · 1Variety, citing the press release, says Episode 2 follows Rowling as she becomes "an increasingly powerful political voice". The release describes her as "one of Britain’s most polarizing public figures", admired by supporters as a defender of women's rights and condemned by critics who call her an opponent of trans equality. Left · 1Rowling is not participating. The series will use archive material, her writing and interviews with some people who have worked with her. Left · 1Simon Young, BBC history's head of commissioning, said there was "no better time" to explore her, thirty years after the first Harry Potter book. He said no cultural history of 21st-century Britain would be complete without her story.

Mixed · 2The series is due on BBC Two, BBC Scotland and iPlayer, with BBC Studios handling global distribution. Variety links the news to HBO's Harry Potter TV reboot, due this Christmas. Deadline says the documentary is likely to draw significant scrutiny.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
