The story, neutrally told

Right · 2Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase left Sunday's Week 4 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the second quarter after a tackle in which a defender grabbed Chase's facemask and another hit Chase in the head and upper-body area. Right · 1Fox News (Outkick) reported that Chase caught a pass on the left side of the field and tried to move around Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones, who grabbed a handful of the facemask. Chase shook off the grip but took a hit from linebacker Ventrell Miller, and Jones was penalized. Mixed · 2Newsweek described two flags against Jacksonville on the play, one for the facemask and another for an unnecessary hit on Chase, who it said was already down. Fox reported only that Jones was penalized.

Right · 1IJR reported that the catch was a short pass from Joe Burrow on second-and-21 with about 12 minutes left in the first half, with Cincinnati trailing 3-0. Right · 1Chase lay on the ground as trainers came out, then walked off under their own power to the medical tent and later to the locker room with a towel over their head, according to IJR. Right · 2The Bengals first listed Chase as questionable to return while evaluating a possible concussion, and said at the start of the second half that Chase would miss the rest of the game.

Centre · 1Newsweek, citing NFL insider Adam Schefter, reported that Chase was ruled out for the rest of the game with a concussion. Right · 2The Bengals finished the drive with a 29-yard Evan McPherson field goal that tied the game 3-3, and Burrow later threw a touchdown to Mike Gesicki on the first drive of the second half; Fox noted Burrow had thrown a first-half interception. Right · 3The three outlets give different figures for Chase's game and season stats. IJR said Chase had 3 catches for 26 yards before exiting, after entering with 18 catches, 185 yards and 3 touchdowns. Fox said 3 catches for 37 yards, and 16 catches for 173 yards and three touchdowns over the previous two games. Newsweek said 3 catches for 27 yards and no touchdowns, and 18 catches for 185 yards and three touchdowns this season.

Right · 2Context: Chase had 9 catches for 98 yards and a touchdown the prior week in Pittsburgh, and hyperextended a left knee in an Aug. 25 practice without missing a game; Fox called Chase a five-time Pro Bowler, and Cincinnati was 2-1 entering the game. Centre · 1Newsweek said Chase is now in concussion protocol with no clear return timeline and could miss at least the next game, against the winless Miami Dolphins, with a clearer status likely later this week; Cincinnati then plays the Baltimore Ravens on Oct. 25. It noted Chase missed five games in 2022 after aggravating a hairline hip fracture, and that Tee Higgins leads the Bengals in receiving yards this season.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
