The story, neutrally told

Democrat Rebecca Bennett and Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. met in a Sunday debate in New Jersey's 7th Congressional District. JNS describes it as the candidates' only debate this fall, in a race Democrats need to flip to win the House; Cook Political Report and Inside Elections give Bennett a slight edge. Breitbart reports a moderator asked Bennett three times for her net worth, and she gave no figure. She said she did not know the exact number and would follow up later.

Bennett said her finances resemble those of many local families in which both spouses work. She cited her ROTC scholarship and GI Bill-funded MBA, and the audience laughed when the moderator asked if she was worth over a million dollars. Bennett said Kean has traded over $3 million in stocks and taken corporate PAC money. Kean said he has not traded an individual stock in Congress and uses a blind structure. The National Republican Congressional Committee, through spokeswoman Maureen O’Toole, called Bennett a “Lying Democrat” and criticised her health care career.

On Israel, Kean said it is “absolutely justified” in its war against Hamas and that the US must help it win. Bennett criticised the Netanyahu administration as not in Israel's long-term interests, comparing it with her view of the Trump administration and the US. She said she would hold Israel to the same standard as other allies. Both candidates endorsed a two-state solution and condemned antisemitism. Kean said Bennett would not stand up to her own party on the issue.

Framing
Breitbart leads with Bennett's net worth evasion as hypocrisy given her anti-money-in-politics pledge. JNS focuses on the Israel exchange and on Kean's support for Israel against Bennett's criticism of Netanyahu.
Emphasis
Breitbart: Bennett's non-answers, Kean's rebuttal, NRCC attack, her policy positions. JNS: Israel, antisemitism, Democratic critics of Israel.
Leaves out or plays down
Breitbart does not give Bennett's Israel remarks or the race ratings; JNS omits the net worth and stock trading exchange. Neither includes Democratic campaign responses.
Charged language
“Dodges”“Lying Democrat”“shady career”“Jew-hatred”
For example
“Bennett refuses to come clean about her own finances and shady career in the healthcare industry” — Breitbart
“Both candidates also condemned Jew-hatred.” — JNS
