The story, neutrally told

Left · 2Black Bear announced on Wednesday 7 October that 'Wicker' will screen in 4DX for a one-night-only event on October 28. Left · 24DX seats move and are equipped with effects including motion, water, wind, scents and vibration; IndieWire counts 21 different effects. Left · 1IndieWire says Black Bear and 4DX expect screenings at roughly 60 locations in the U.S. at the time of writing.

Left · 2Both outlets say the event followed fan demand: the film became a viral sensation online, and fans campaigned for it to play in the immersive format. Left · 2David Spitz, Black Bear's head of U.S. theatrical distribution, said audiences 'started asking to experience it in 4DX' from the moment the trailer landed, and that the format gives 'audiences exactly what they asked for'. Left · 1Directors Eleanor Wilson and Alex Huston Fischer also commented. Wilson said the team was surprised by how much 4DX enhances the film, and Fischer said they first thought it was a joke. Paul Kim, COO of 4DX parent company CJ 4DPLEX, said the film's world allows unexpected use of motion and environmental effects.

Left · 2The film stars Olivia Colman as a fisherwoman who has a local basket weaver (Peter Dinklage) craft her a husband (Alexander Skarsgård), with Elizabeth Debicki also in the cast. The Hollywood Reporter says it is based on Ursula Wills' short story 'The Wicker Husband', and IndieWire notes it came out of Sundance. Left · 2The outlets disagree on the release date: IndieWire says the film opens October 30, while The Hollywood Reporter says it hits theaters October 23. Left · 1IndieWire adds that Black Bear is still an upstart distributor that could use a hit, noting that 'Christy' and 'The Rivals of Amziah King' struggled in theaters.
