The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Mark Okotie, 44, of Naylor Road, Southwark, was jailed for three years and six months at Woolwich Crown Court for deliberately driving into a cyclist while delivering blood to a hospital. Mixed · 2The collision happened at around 5.40pm on 20 March 2024 on New Cross Road in Lewisham, south-east London. Mixed · 2Witnesses told police they saw a van swerve out of its lane into the cyclist's path and then accelerate; one witness said they believed the driver was trying to kill the cyclist.

Mixed · 2Police secured dashcam footage from inside and outside Okotie's van and from other vehicles, including buses; the Daily Mail says the internal video shows him speeding up before hitting the cyclist, and the Evening Standard says it shows him steering into the cyclist on purpose. Mixed · 2The cyclist, described by the Evening Standard as a man in his 20s, suffered multiple pelvic fractures and a fractured femur, and needed surgery to insert metal fixings into his pelvis and leg. Mixed · 2In a victim statement the cyclist said he can no longer jog each morning, panics when a van or large vehicle approaches from behind, and now avoids people more than before.

Mixed · 2Detective Inspector Steven Andrews, who led the investigation, said Okotie was carrying blood for patients in need and chose instead to put someone's life at risk, and that the footage and witness evidence left "no doubt about Okotie's culpability". Mixed · 2The Evening Standard describes the incident as road rage following an altercation between the two; the Daily Mail does not give a motive.
