The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2The Booker Prize has released short films for its 2026 shortlist, in which actors read extracts from the nominated books. Centre · 2Himesh Patel reads from Luke Kennard's Black Bag and Maxine Peake from Elizabeth Strout's The Things We Never Say; Lewis Gribben reads John of John by Douglas Stuart, Kathryn Hunter reads The End of Everything by M John Harrison, Savannah Steyn reads May We Feed the King by Rebecca Perry, and Paterson Joseph reads The Disappearers by Marlon James. Centre · 1Director and choreographer Holly Blakey directed the six two-minute films, her second time making Booker shorts, and they were produced for the Booker Prize Foundation by Park Pictures.

Centre · 2Blakey said the aim was to push the visual language somewhere new, shooting much of it outside, and that the films were less about narrativising the books than about the feelings they leave behind. Centre · 1Gaby Wood, chief executive of the Booker Prize Foundation, said the films draw more readers to the books each year and that this set is the most ambitious yet. Centre · 2Deadline reported that since 2022 the prize has recruited stars to read from shortlisted books, and that the Booker Prize 2025 and International Booker Prize 2026 films have a combined 132M views; the Standard noted earlier performers including Stormzy, Dua Lipa, Toby Jones, David Harewood and Will Poulter.

Centre · 2The films can be viewed on the Booker Prize website and social channels, including YouTube. Centre · 1The winner will be announced on 9 November at a ceremony in London, livestreamed on the prize's channels, and will receive £50,000 and a trophy named Iris; last year's winner was David Szalay for Flesh. Centre · 1Deadline described Marlon James, a previous winner, as an early favourite for the 2026 prize, and said Szalay has told it a film adaptation of Flesh is planned with House Productions.
