The story, neutrally told

The fire service has said that a battery which caused a house fire that killed a mother and three children was from an e-scooter. Elisha Brabin, 36, and her children Leo, 16, Ellis, eight, and Prudence, seven, died in the blaze at around 3.45am on September 20. The semi-detached house on Stone Square in Bootle, Merseyside, was "well alight" when emergency services arrived.

Four people were found with no signs of life in an upstairs bedroom, and a fifth person, Ms Brabin's partner, was taken to hospital with burns. A joint investigation by the fire service and Merseyside Police established that the lithium-ion battery was for an e-scooter and was on charge at the time. The cause was determined to be an "electrical event" that sent the battery into thermal runaway, a chain reaction causing a rapid temperature spike and fire.

The family described Elisha as a devoted mother who "lived for her children" and said the children were "loved beyond measure". Kev Johnson, the service's head of prevention, urged people to use only batteries and chargers supplied with the vehicle or approved by the manufacturer.
