The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Season 2 of the CBS Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue premiered on Friday 9 October 2026, and its showrunners, Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, have given interviews to Screen Rant and TVLine about where the story goes next. Centre · 1Margolis told Screen Rant that season 1 had to lay groundwork and introduce new characters, while season 2 lets the writers "pay off some of the things that we planted last season" and lean into the soap and drama of the characters' lives. Centre · 1The season picks up after the season 1 cliffhanger in which Detective Brian (Ryan Broussard), Lena's boyfriend, was run off the road by a mysterious figure; Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) and Lena (Sonequa Martin-Green) investigate that attack and a series of murders mirroring the Boston Strangler.

Centre · 1In the premiere, Danny accepts a promotion to detective sergeant after Lena gives her blessing; Sonnier said it was important that the promotion not come at Lena's expense, since she was passed over for a promotion last season, and Margolis said the partners still ride together and the core dynamic is unchanged. Centre · 1Wahlberg told TVLine that he and Martin-Green approached the scene from opposite directions: he wanted Danny to be hesitant because of the effect on Lena, while Martin-Green wanted Lena to encourage Danny to follow the legacy of his father Frank and grandfather Henry. Centre · 1Original Blue Bloods actor Len Cariou returns as Henry Reagan in the premiere by video call, and Wahlberg said such reunions have sometimes left him and Sonnier in tears.

Centre · 1Will Estes is set to return as Jamie Reagan in season 2 episode 5; Margolis said Jamie's visit may start as a professional one but "balloons into something bigger, and turns into a full-episode story," and Sonnier said viewers will get an update on Jamie's wife Eddie and their son. Centre · 1Margolis said of the Reagans from the original show, "We miss those characters," and Sonnier said Jamie's first appearance is meant to give the audience air to re-embrace the character, with the team apparently hoping Jamie will return again. Centre · 1Margolis said Brian was never seriously considered for death, because the show wanted to move away from mourning after Ben Silver's loss and because the team likes Broussard; in the premiere Brian struggles with PTSD and Superintendent Sarah Silver (Maggie Lawson) declines to clear him for duty.

Centre · 1On the mystery of who is targeting the family, Sonnier said it is "a new threat that comes from someone close to the family" that will affect the Silvers and Reagans "for some time to come"; Margolis said the one thing viewers can trust about opponent Thad Longfellow is that he will protect himself. Centre · 1A second premiere storyline concerns Mae's reelection campaign, where opposition research found her car outside a family planning clinic in 1985; she was there supporting her sister Jill, who had an abortion that their father, Reverend Peters, does not know about, and Sonnier promised political and family fallout, including a reconciliation, with Jill returning. Centre · 1Screen Rant also reported that Sonnier said Lena's newly introduced biological father, himself a police officer, gives the show a chance to explore how a new cop in her life influences her policing, and that growing pains are expected as family members are introduced.
