The story, neutrally told

Atlanta beat Philadelphia 5-3 on Tuesday, 29 September, in Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series at Truist Park. The winning blow was a three-run homer by Austin Riley off Phillies closer Jhoan Duran in the eighth inning. Fox News reports that Michael Harris II opened the eighth with a single and Duran then hit Ozzie Albies with a pitch before Riley drove the ball over the right-center-field wall.

Philadelphia had led 3-2 after J.T. Realmuto's two-run triple off Chris Sale in the seventh inning. Manager Don Mattingly had brought in Duran in the seventh, earlier than usual, and Duran retired the side in order. After the game Mattingly said the use of Duran had been planned in advance, while conceding the frustration: "You live with this one."

IJR notes that Duran had allowed two homers in 61 regular-season games and that the Phillies bullpen had the majors' worst September ERA, at 5.79. Newsweek says it was Riley's third postseason homer in the eighth inning or later, tying the all-time record. Riley had a weak regular season, with 19 home runs; Fox cites a .219 average and Newsweek a .654 OPS.

Atlanta needs one more win to advance; Game 2 is Wednesday in Atlanta, with Cristopher Sánchez due to pitch for the Phillies.
