The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Conservative Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party (PL) finished first in Brazil's presidential election on Sunday 4 October 2026, ahead of incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Mixed · 2Bolsonaro took 47.03 percent of the vote to Lula's 45.16 percent, according to Breitbart; Anadolu gives about 47% and 45% from the final results. Neither passed the 50 percent threshold, so a runoff is set for 25 October. Right · 1Turnout was nearly 79 percent of an electorate of about 158.7 million. Breitbart calls the result a surprise, saying Bolsonaro defied polls, including some released hours before the vote.

Right · 1Bolsonaro said the vote marked "the end of the PT era" and that "change in the country is now a reality". He said his party's internal polling suggested he might have won outright, and that he seemed to pass 50 percent in preliminary counts before his lead shrank as votes from Lula strongholds were tallied. Right · 1Lula, 80, who spoke alongside Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, said he had been "convinced" he would win in the first round but is "good at knockout matches". He said his campaign would "begin from scratch" on Tuesday and accused the Bolsonaros of a "sinister past". Right · 1Breitbart, citing Brazilian outlets, reports that this was Lula's worst first-round showing since 1998. It also reports that he received 3.4 million fewer votes than in the 2022 first round and lost ground in Minas Gerais. Unnamed Lula campaign sources told Metrópoles they saw the result as a "blow".

Right · 1In the Senate, Breitbart, citing Jovem Pan, reports that the PL rose from 15 seats to 28. It says the PL and other right-wing parties will hold 49 of 81 seats from February 2027, against 27 left-wing senators and five centrists. Lula's Workers' Party (PT) kept its nine seats. These figures come from Breitbart's relay of Brazilian reports. Right · 1In the 513-seat Chamber of Deputies, the PL reportedly won 121 seats, against 88 for a coalition of left-wing parties including the PT. Final lower-house results had not yet been published by the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE) when Breitbart wrote. Right · 1Governors were decided in the first round in 20 of 27 states: 13 went to right-wing parties, five to the PL (including Sergio Moro in Paraná) and three to the PT. Seven races go to runoffs on 25 October.

Centre · 1US President Donald Trump called Bolsonaro's result "a great victory! Incredible, in fact" in a post on X on Monday. Anadolu notes that Trump has close ties to the Bolsonaro family, hosted Flavio Bolsonaro at the White House in May, and has criticised Lula's government's policies toward the US.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
