The story, neutrally told

John Agner, an 85-year-old Briton, was found dead in the garden of his isolated home near Verlus, in the Gers department of south-west France, in the early hours of Saturday. Police found him after chasing his stolen Kia near Mont-de-Marsan at about 2.30am, traced the plate to him and went to his house. The deputy prosecutor's office in Auch said a forensic doctor found very violent blows to the face, which are likely the cause of death, pending a post-mortem.

GB News and the Daily Mail say four men fled the car on foot, while the Independent says two men were seen fleeing. A 60-year-old man was arrested and three others are reported to be at large. The motive is unclear: the prosecutor said it is not known whether the attackers came to steal, and Mayor Jean Menvielle said nothing was taken from the house.

The Mayor said the killing probably happened on Friday afternoon or evening. Mr Agner lived alone while his wife was in hospital. The Daily Mail adds neighbours' speculation that he talked openly about his money or took in paying guests, and reports an estranged daughter. None of this is confirmed as a lead. The case has moved to the Agen prosecutor's criminal division, with Toulouse gendarmes involved, and the UK Foreign Office said it was in touch with French authorities.
