The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2BYD reported a 28 per cent rise in third-quarter net profit to 10 billion yuan (about $1.5 billion) on Thursday 29 October, according to a stock filing. Centre · 2The result was smaller than expected: CNA, citing Reuters-compiled estimates from three brokerages, said forecasts ranged from 11.4 billion to 12.95 billion yuan, while the South China Morning Post said BYD and Geely both missed a Bloomberg survey of estimates. Centre · 1Profit growth cooled from a 30 per cent increase in the previous quarter.

Centre · 2Revenue rose 13.6 per cent year on year, reversing a 3 per cent fall in the second quarter and ending a four-quarter run of declines; CNA gives the figure as 221.5 billion yuan, while the SCMP gives 211.5 billion yuan. Centre · 2Both outlets credit strong exports for offsetting weakness at home; BYD delivered 1.34 million vehicles overseas from January to September, up 92.7 per cent, while its mainland sales fell 30.2 per cent to 1.79 million, the SCMP reported. Centre · 1Geely Auto said its third-quarter net income climbed 28 per cent to 4.8 billion yuan and revenue rose 10 per cent to 99 billion yuan; its nine-month exports rose 169 per cent to 797,670 units while domestic deliveries fell 23.3 per cent to 1.44 million.

Centre · 1Ivan Li of Loyal Wealth Management said overseas sales are a cushion against a big downturn at home, and JPMorgan's Nick Lai said in May that per-vehicle profit abroad could be about four times the roughly 5,000 yuan earned on the mainland. Centre · 1The China Passenger Car Association expects Chinese carmakers' overseas deliveries to reach 12 million in 2026, up 44 per cent from 8.3 million, while domestic sales of Chinese groups fell 21.7 per cent to 15.3 million in the first nine months; analysts expect consolidation to widen the gap between top players and the rest.
