The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming has reclaimed the title of China's richest person, according to the Hurun Research Institute's rich list released on Tuesday 27 October. Mixed · 2His wealth rose 43% to US$99.7 billion (CBS News rounds it to $100 billion), a record for China's richest individual. Hurun's Rupert Hoogewerf said almost all of the rise came from AI. Mixed · 2The South China Morning Post says Zhang, 43, last topped the ranking in 2024. Hoogewerf pointed to ByteDance's Doubao, which he described as China's most-used AI assistant.

Mixed · 2The 28th edition of the list counted a record 1,529 people with fortunes above 5 billion yuan (about US$750 million), up 6.6% on last year. The previous peak was 1,460 in 2021. The number of US dollar billionaires rose by 155 to 1,176, which is 176 more than in the US. Mixed · 2AI was the biggest single source of wealth on the list, with 160 people, about one in ten, making their money from it. DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng, 41, debuted on the China list at No 7 with US$41.7 billion. Cambricon chip designer Chen Tianshi entered the top 10 with US$30.5 billion. Centre · 1Zhong Shanshan, last year's richest person, fell to second with US$61 billion, down 23%. The SCMP attributes this to weaker Nongfu Spring shares and a halving of the share price of his vaccine firm Wantai Bio. CATL chairman Robin Zeng came third with US$57.3 billion and Tencent's Pony Ma fourth with US$51.5 billion.

Mixed · 2Hoogewerf described a "two-speed economy": AI, semiconductor and robotics entrepreneurs surged, while consumer, real estate and traditional manufacturing fortunes shrank. Of the record number of entries, 911 fell or stood still, against 785 gainers. Xiaomi's Lei Jun was the biggest faller, his wealth halved to $25.1 billion. For the first time, no mainland property developer is in the top 100. Centre · 1Hoogewerf said wealth is concentrating: 43 people are worth 100 billion yuan or more, up from none a decade ago, and he expects that number to double in five years. He called China's first yuan trillionaires "a matter of when, not if" and named Zhang and Liang as strong candidates. Left · 1CBS News adds context on the economy and TikTok. China's economy grew 4.5% in the third quarter, while small businesses struggled and the property market remained in a long downturn. TikTok's US operations moved in January to a joint venture made up mostly of American investors, in which ByteDance keeps a minority stake.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
