The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2The families of David and Douglas Gresham, C.S. Lewis's stepsons, issued an official statement through Netflix supporting director Greta Gerwig and her film Narnia: The Magician's Nephew. Centre · 1In the statement they said they had "personally witnessed her sincere passion for the Narnia series" in ongoing conversations with Gerwig, and that they saw her enthusiasm during a visit to the film's set in London. Centre · 1They also said they were keen to keep working with the team on future projects, and that their vision was for the movie to be "enormously successful" and for the same calibre of talent to be applied to all of the Chronicles of Narnia.

Centre · 1Collider notes that Douglas Gresham is Lewis's surviving stepson, was a producer on The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and its sequels, and retains an executive producer credit on Gerwig's film. Centre · 1Screen Rant says the statement followed reports that Lewis's relatives had concerns about decisions on the film; Movieguide founder Ted Baehr told CBN that the family opposed casting Meryl Streep as Aslan, worried about the franchise's future and wanted more control over the company managing Lewis's rights. Centre · 1Screen Rant observes that Netflix's message did not mention Streep's casting, so that specific claim was neither confirmed nor denied, and it advises treating it cautiously; it also says the statement predates the film's first trailer on 13 October 2026 and is not a response to that footage.

Centre · 1The film is due for an IMAX and worldwide theatrical release on 12 February 2027 and on Netflix on 2 April; its cast includes Meryl Streep as the voice of Aslan, Emma Mackey as the White Witch, Daniel Craig, Ciarán Hinds and Carey Mulligan.
