The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski said in an interview with the Polish outlet PAP Biznes that the studio does not want the planned Cyberpunk 2077 film to adapt the game's story directly. Centre · 2In the quoted words, Nowakowski said: "We want to tell a story in the world of Cyberpunk, but it won’t be a one-to-one translation of the game’s story." Centre · 1Paramount's film was first announced on October 8, about six years after the game's 2020 release. Screen Rant reports that it has no confirmed cast or director, that CD Projekt Red will produce alongside Paramount, and that Lorenzo di Bonaventura, a longtime Transformers and G.I. Joe producer, is attached.

Centre · 1/Film says the film was previously known only to be set in Night City, the game's dystopian setting. Centre · 2Both outlets note that the game's story depends on player choice, and both read the approach as sensible. Screen Rant points to the game's protagonist V, the character Johnny Silverhand played by Keanu Reeves, and the Netflix series Cyberpunk Edgerunners (2022), which told new stories in the game's world and was widely acclaimed. It says there is no guarantee Reeves would return. Centre · 2Both outlets compare the plan to Zack Cregger's Resident Evil (2026), which tells an original story in the games' world. Screen Rant says it holds a 96% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and has grossed $325 million worldwide, and that it was made on an estimated $75 million budget. It adds that a faithful Cyberpunk would likely cost more.

Centre · 2The outlets differ on how contested the decision is. Screen Rant says it could prove divisive but that it is too early to judge, while /Film expects fan arguments but says it is relieved by the approach.
