The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Airbnb.org, the nonprofit arm of Airbnb that offers free temporary housing to people in need, held its first gala on Wednesday 28 October at Milk Studios in Los Angeles. Mixed · 2Jimmy Kimmel hosted, and the guests included Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, Zoe Saldaña, Cynthia Erivo, Joaquin Phoenix, Serena Williams and Demi Lovato, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which listed many more; TechCrunch named Williams, Lovato, Theron and Erivo. Mixed · 2Chef José Andrés curated the dinner menu, and Charli xcx gave a surprise closing performance, with guests such as Greta Lee, will.i.am and Jaden Smith dancing in front of the stage.

Left · 1Kimmel opened with jokes in the style of Airbnb house rules, including quiet hours at 10 p.m. and a 14-day window to post a review of the evening, and Theron spoke briefly on stage about housing for survivors of domestic violence. Mixed · 2The gala marked the launch of an initiative under which Airbnb donates a portion of its revenue from each stay to Airbnb.org, which Airbnb says will provide $500 million over five years toward a goal of 1 million free nights of housing a year. Centre · 1TechCrunch reported that the contribution amounts to 10 cents per stay, counting from 28 October, and noted that Airbnb made $12.2 billion in revenue last year.

Mixed · 2The initiative also extends support beyond disaster response to families travelling for medical care, survivors fleeing domestic violence and, per TechCrunch, veterans in need. The Hollywood Reporter says Airbnb.org has provided 1.6 million nights of free emergency housing since its 2020 founding and responded to more than 200 disasters in 2026. Left · 1Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said the gala was meant to get the word out that the nonprofit is there to help and wants to house more people. Centre · 1An Airbnb spokesperson would not say how much tables cost, said fundraising was not the focus and that no fundraising target was set, and Airbnb did not say whether the gala will recur.

Centre · 1TechCrunch reported that online reaction was confusion over why Airbnb was holding a gala, and said such events are a way to bring wealthy people together and win media attention.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
