The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Ankur Patel, a 31-year-old Indian-origin man, was arrested in connection with the August 2026 killing of his estranged wife in Chicago. Centre · 2Hindustan Times, citing CBS News, reports that he has been charged with first-degree murder. The woman's name was not released. Centre · 2The woman left Patel in May and began dating a former colleague. Under family pressure the couple briefly reunited at their Wisconsin home, but she soon moved out and their daughter stayed with Patel.

Centre · 2Prosecutors say Patel threatened by phone to kill both his wife and her new partner, and stopped her from speaking to their daughter. Centre · 2About two weeks before the killing, Patel moved in with relatives in Chicago and sent the couple's five-year-old daughter to live with his parents in India, without telling his wife. He then invited her to Chicago to see the child, and she and her new partner travelled there from Louisiana. Centre · 1Store surveillance footage showed Patel buying a small folding knife and making stabbing and slicing motions with it, according to the Times of India's account of the prosecution case.

Centre · 2Her partner waited outside while she went into Patel's apartment, where she found that her daughter was not there. Assistant State's Attorney Mike Pekara said the two argued as Patel expressed a wish to reunite, and that Patel then stabbed her in the neck. An autopsy found multiple defensive wounds, including a deep laceration to her left arm. Centre · 2When she stopped answering his messages, the partner called 911. Police could not reach either person and left because he did not know which apartment she had entered. Centre · 2Patel failed to turn up to a meeting with friends that night. They went to his apartment and found the woman's body near a washing machine.

Centre · 2Patel went to O'Hare International Airport, but the ticket counter was closed. He checked into a nearby hotel, disposed of the knife and bought clothes at a Target store. The Times of India adds that he paid with his debit card. Centre · 2The next day he returned to the airport and bought a ticket to India. The Times of India says the Department of Homeland Security had already been alerted, and he was arrested. Centre · 2Patel told police he did not want to kill his wife but 'finished her' when she said she would stay with her new partner.
