The story, neutrally told

Centre · 1On 4 November China called for a "constructive strategic relationship" with the US as Democrats were projected to take control of Congress after midterm elections that Anadolu described as a major setback for President Donald Trump. Centre · 1Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning called the elections a US "domestic" affair and said Beijing was willing to work with Washington to implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state, strengthen communication, manage differences and expand cooperation. Centre · 1Xi Jinping and Trump agreed at summits in May and September to pursue a "constructive relationship of strategic stability based on respect, fairness and reciprocity", and Xi is expected to host Trump later this month in Shenzhen on the sidelines of the APEC forum.

Centre · 1US media projected Democrats would hold 53 Senate seats to 42 for Republicans with counting continuing, and the party was poised to win at least 218 of the House's 435 seats, the majority threshold. Right · 1Separately, the state-run Global Times wrote after the midterms that "the 'myth' of Western-style democracy is losing its appeal, even in the West", citing a Pew Research Center poll this year that put dissatisfaction with democracy at 69 percent in the US and France, 68 percent in Spain, 62 percent in Italy and 47 percent in Poland. Right · 1The paper also cited an OECD survey in which 68 percent believe voting has a significant or moderate influence on government but only 31 percent are confident people like them have a say, and said there is no one-size-fits-all democratic model and that some Western politicians use democracy as a political instrument for export.

Right · 1Breitbart characterised the editorial as gloating and an attempt to deter Western criticism of China's political model, and pointed to China's anti-corruption purges of officials.
