The story, neutrally told

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said on Wednesday that he will seek another term as Senate Democratic leader. Schumer told Punchbowl News that the midterm outcome has no bearing on the decision, and that it would be a sixth straight term. The remarks came after senators cast final votes and left Washington until after the Nov. 3 elections.

Schumer has led the caucus since 2017 and was majority leader from 2021 until Republicans regained control of the chamber in 2025, according to the Washington Examiner. The Washington Examiner reports that Democratic nominees Abdul el Sayed (Michigan), Peggy Flanagan (Minnesota), Troy Jackson (Maine) and Juliana Stratton (Illinois) have said they would not support Schumer for another term as leader. No sitting Democratic senator has publicly launched a bid to replace Schumer, and the opposing candidates still have to win in November.

Democrats need to net four seats to take control of the Senate. Schumer said Democrats are leaving town with “wind in their sails” but acknowledged an “almost obscene” Republican funding advantage, and declined to say whether he will seek reelection in 2028.
