The story, neutrally told

Right · 2A congressional commission studying whether Philadelphia's Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History should become part of the Smithsonian Institution was sworn in and held its first meeting on Tuesday. Right · 1Sens. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) and Dave McCormick (R-Pa.) swore in chair Philip Darivoff, vice chair Dara Horn and the six other commissioners. Right · 1Congress passed the law creating the commission in 2024, and President Joe Biden signed it; JNS reports the House and Senate approved it unanimously. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries appointed Darivoff, a former chair of the Weitzman, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune chose Horn, an author.

Right · 1Other members include former Democratic congresswoman Kathy Manning, historian Tevi Troy and Michael Goldfarb, founder and publisher of the Washington Free Beacon. Right · 2The commission has two years from its first meeting to report to Congress and the president on issues including the possible transfer of collections, the financial implications, and the effect on combating Jew-hatred; Darivoff hopes to finish sooner. Right · 2Darivoff and Horn say Smithsonian membership would signal that Jewish American history matters to the nation and counter what they call an "epidemic of ignorance"; Horn argues the Holocaust should not be the main thing Americans learn about Jews, and Darivoff said people too often learn about Jews "from people who don't like Jews."

Right · 1The Weitzman, founded in 1976, is already a Smithsonian affiliate with its own building and collection, which proponents hope could speed the process; its CEO Dan Tadmor said Smithsonian involvement would widen its educational reach. Right · 1The Smithsonian, an independent federal trust with 21 museums, would find the Weitzman unusual for being in Philadelphia rather than Washington, D.C., and the first such museum devoted to Jewish Americans; the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum is a federal institution but not part of the Smithsonian. Right · 1The Jerusalem Post, carrying a JTA report, places the bid amid Trump administration efforts to exert more control over the Smithsonian, including a summer White House report alleging "radical ideology" and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum's plan for signs accusing its leaders of bias; Secretary Lonnie Bunch III leaves at year's end. A Smithsonian representative declined to comment, and the commissioners said the politics should not affect their work.

Framing
Both outlets, which are Israel-based and lean right, present the commission's work sympathetically, largely through interviews with chair Darivoff and vice chair Horn about the case for Smithsonian inclusion.
Emphasis
The commissioners' arguments about Jewish agency, ignorance of Jewish history, antisemitism and the Holocaust-centred view; JNS adds commission membership and the legal mandate, while the Jerusalem Post adds the Trump administration's Smithsonian dispute.
Leaves out or plays down
Neither quotes critics of the proposal or any Smithsonian leader. JNS leaves out the Smithsonian's current political turmoil; the Jerusalem Post gives less detail on appointments and the commission's remit.
Charged language
“epidemic of ignorance”“dead Jews”“Jew-hatred”
For example
“said that the Weitzman joining the Smithsonian would send a powerful message that Jews are a crucial component of the history of the country.” — The Jerusalem Post
“bringing the museum into the Smithsonian fold would promote teaching Jewish history from a Jewish perspective.” — JNS
