The story, neutrally told

A former Cornell student, identified as Jane Doe, filed a 101-page civil lawsuit on 16 September alleging she was drugged and raped by seven Chi Phi fraternity members in October 2024, and that Cornell failed to protect her or adequately punish them. Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten, who declined to bring charges in 2024, has reopened the investigation and plans a grand jury. He said her sworn 2024 statement described the drug use and sexual conduct as consensual, and that New York law on voluntary intoxication limited prosecution.

CBS News New York then obtained a transcript of her police interview in which she described being "pretty OK" with the initial encounter but said of later events, "I can say with 100% confidence I was raped"; Van Houten said he had never seen it and would follow up. Her lawyer, Thomas Giuffra, says campus police never followed up with her and says he and his client have no confidence in the DA. Cornell rejects the claim that it imposed minimal consequences, saying a hearing panel issued sanctions including expulsions and suspensions, though it did not deny essays were part of some outcomes.

Gov. Kathy Hochul called the allegations "horrifying" and asked for an independent review of Cornell's response, while Ithaca Mayor Robert Cantelmo proposed a moratorium on student event permits. Students told The Independent they distrust the administration, and an online petition passed 104,000 signatures. Lawyers for some accused men deny the allegations, and the claims remain unproven.
