The story, neutrally told

The Dallas Cowboys confirmed on Thursday 1 October 2026 that they had acquired Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick. Newsweek says The Ringer's Tom Pelissero first reported the move on Wednesday night, while Fox News describes it as agreed early Thursday according to multiple reports. Porter wrote "Here I come ... Dallas" on Instagram Stories, which both outlets cite as confirmation of the deal.

Porter has not played this season amid a contract dispute with the Steelers and a back issue, and Pittsburgh had already ruled the player out of Thursday's game against the Cleveland Browns. Newsweek reports that a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter there is a "chance" Porter, 26, could debut for Dallas on Sunday against the Houston Texans. Porter was drafted by the Steelers with the No. 32 pick in 2023 and recorded 165 tackles, 31 pass breakups and three interceptions in 47 games; Fox News cites last season's totals of an interception, 52 tackles and a sack.

Dallas needs defensive help: it is 1-2, has allowed 27.3 points per game and an NFC-high 72.6% completion rate, and has no interceptions, according to Newsweek, and Fox News says it allows an average of 387 yards per game, third-worst in the league. Newsweek adds that cornerback Cobie Durant has a hamstring injury and rookie Shavon Revel Jr., who tore an ACL last season, injured his other knee against the Baltimore Ravens. Fox News places the deal in owner Jerry Jones's pattern of spending draft picks, noting the earlier Micah Parsons trade to Green Bay and the acquisition of Quinnen Williams, and says Jones had said in September the team was "in play" for another defensive trade.
