The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Intermarché and Coopérative U, two major French supermarket chains, said a cyberattack caused refrigerators in their stores to defrost, they told AFP on Monday 12 October 2026. Centre · 1The retailers said some 150-200 Intermarché shops and almost 100 Coopérative U outlets were targeted. Mixed · 2Coopérative U chief executive Dominique Schelcher said refrigeration systems had been affected since the night of Sunday 11 October. He called the attack "unprecedented" and "unacceptable" in a post on X, and said teams were "fully mobilised" to restore the situation.

Mixed · 2Intermarché said affected branches will have to "throw away all of the products", both fresh and frozen. It condemned the food waste and financial losses without giving figures, and warned that insurance policies may not "cover this type" of in-store incident. Mixed · 2The Paris prosecutor's office confirmed it has opened an investigation into "the large-scale cyberattack affecting the refrigerators of several major food retail chains across France". It said the probe will identify the victims and establish the link with reported foodstuff losses and outbreaks of fire. Mixed · 2Other chains may also be affected but this is unconfirmed. BFM TV reported that E. Leclerc, France's largest supermarket chain, was hit, with hackers remotely triggering forced defrosting in numerous stores. E. Leclerc did not immediately confirm this to AFP. The website Je Bosse en Grande Distribution said Carrefour Market and Monoprix were also affected, but those companies had not confirmed it.

Mixed · 2No perpetrator has been named in this coverage. AFP placed the incident against growing concern over cyberattacks in Europe, noting that President Emmanuel Macron ordered measures in September to protect French critical infrastructure from Russian "hybrid attacks".

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
