The story, neutrally told

Right · 1A new cross-party parliamentary group to strengthen relations with Israel was launched in Nicosia, with Cypriot MP Chrysis Pantelides as its chair; JNS says it followed a similar caucus set up a day earlier in Greece. Mixed · 2Al Jazeera describes the Cypriot group as a caucus of six lawmakers from three parties, launched by the Israel Allies Foundation, a pro-Israel advocacy group, and dates the launch to Tuesday; JNS says Wednesday. Right · 1At the launch Pantelides said stronger ties were "more vital than ever" because of shared risks from neighbouring states and terrorist organisations, and said Cyprus has been "half-occupied by Turkey for 52 years".

Right · 1Israel Allies Foundation officials Josh Reinstein (president) and Leo Van Doesburg (Europe director) praised Cyprus and Greece and criticised Turkey, with Van Doesburg saying "Ankara has no veto over our partnerships or our security". The foundation says it has nearly 70 parliamentary groups with over 1,700 legislators worldwide. The Israeli and US ambassadors to Cyprus, Shuli Davidovich and John Breslow, also spoke at the event. Left · 1According to the Cyprus Mail as cited by Al Jazeera, Reinstein called Turkey a "common adversary" after the group met the Cypriot president at the presidential palace on Wednesday. Left · 1The opposition party AKEL called the caucus "extremely provocative", asking what credibility Cyprus has in demanding pressure on Turkey while backing "another occupying and settler state", per the Cyprus Mail as cited by Al Jazeera.

Left · 1Al Jazeera places the caucus within wider Israeli involvement in Cyprus: Mekorot runs two of five desalination plants via joint ventures, Israel Aerospace Industries is supplying Barak MX air defences, Israeli investors held 5.1 billion euros in Cyprus at the end of 2024, NewMed Energy owns 30 percent of the Aphrodite gasfield, and a Hadassah hospital opened in Limassol. Left · 1Al Jazeera says Cyprus's government presents the ties as a security alliance against Turkey, while several Cypriots it interviewed feared handing another state control of systems the island cannot live without. The two governments are also negotiating over the Aphrodite field, which Israel says extends into its waters. Left · 1Turkey has occupied northern Cyprus since 1974, following a coup backed by Greece's military government; only Turkey and Turkish Cypriot leaders recognise Northern Cyprus. Mekorot had not responded to Al Jazeera's request for comment.

Leaves out or plays down
