The story, neutrally told

Left · 1Daniel Kinahan, 49, appeared before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin on Monday 12 October 2026, brought from Portlaoise Prison under armed escort. Left · 1He faces a single charge of directing the activities of a criminal organisation between 18 October 2015 and 6 April 2017, contrary to section 71a of the Criminal Justice Act 2006, as amended. Mixed · 2Both the Irish Independent and The Irish Times report that he will apply for bail while contesting the charge.

Left · 1His solicitor, Darragh Mackin of Phoenix Law, said the application will be made at the High Court "in due course"; The Irish Times understands it will come before the 21 December appearance. Left · 1Prosecutor Dominic McGinn SC sought an adjournment until 21 December to prepare the book of evidence, citing a "complex factual matrix" and a 189-page statement of fact used to secure the extradition, which would need to be reduced to a legally admissible document. Judge Caroline Biggs, presiding at the three-judge court, granted it. Left · 1Mackin also said the defence will seek disclosure of all the information behind two other international investigations of which he said his client was "acquitted", and noted that any trial timetable must allow for examination of digital evidence by defence-instructed experts.

Left · 1Kinahan was the first Irish person extradited from the UAE under a new permanent extradition treaty that came into force last year. He had lived in Dubai for 10 years, was arrested in April on an Irish extradition request, and was flown to Ireland on the Government's Dassault Falcon 6X jet, landing at Casement Aerodrome.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
