The story, neutrally told

Left · 1Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin wrote on an official government account on Wednesday 7 October that "Socialists want to vandalize the demographics of America to gain political power." Left · 1The post added: "We will never allow amnesty, illegal alien voting, or any other scheme to disenfranchise Americans." Right · 1Speaking at Breitbart News's Border Security, Public Safety, and American Sovereignty Event in Washington, DC, Mullin said left-wing advocates demanding the abolition of the Department of Homeland Security were trying to impose socialism through chaos.

Right · 1Mullin said the only way to turn a republic into a socialist or communist country is to "fabricate chaos", and said asking AI how to turn a red state blue would, "100 percent of the time", return "change demographics". Mullin tied this to "Defund police!" demands and the push to abolish DHS. Right · 1Mullin also said the Trump administration is "not anti-immigration" and welcomes people who follow the nation's laws. Left · 1Immigration experts and historians criticised the "vandalize" wording. David J. Bier of the Cato Institute called it "insane garbage" and said the only demographic "vandals" were DHS officials pursuing "100 million deportations".

Left · 1Aaron Reichlin-Melnick of the American Immigration Council called the phrase either "chilling" and suggestive of white nationalism or meaningless, and asked Mullin to explain it. Historian Sergio Gonzales said it echoed 1980s attacks on the sanctuary movement for Central Americans. Right · 1Breitbart's report set the remarks against Democratic calls to defund ICE and CBP, citing Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-IL), and argued that many Democrats welcome demographic change because migrants tend to vote for their party.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
