The story, neutrally told

Disney's supernatural series Coven Academy premieres on Freeform on October 1. Streaming on Disney+ and Hulu therefore starts October 2, not October 1, although Collider's opening line says it begins streaming on October 1. Tim Federle created the series and wrote it for television.

The official logline describes three teenage witches and their warlock peers at an elite magic boarding school in New Orleans. Malina Pauli Weissman stars as Briar and Malachi Barton as Jake, alongside Jordan Leftwich, Ora Duplass, Louis Thresher and Tiffani Thiessen, with Devon Sawa as a guest star. Collider frames the show as Disney's replacement for Agatha All Along and released an exclusive sneak peek featurette with Freeform and Disney.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Federle said the episodes run from 10 to 22 minutes and are meant to feel chapter-based and bingeable, ending without commercial-style breaks. Federle said the idea came from a dinner with Disney Kids & Family president Ayo Davis, and that he wrote the first pilot draft in a night. He said the show is not based on existing intellectual property and thanked Disney for taking the risk, and that after he directed the pilot, all other episodes were directed by women.
