The story, neutrally told

Right · 1The BBC has confirmed that DIY SOS, the home-renovation series presented by Nick Knowles, will be "rested" in 2027, and its latest episode was due to air on BBC One at 8pm on Tuesday 27 October. Right · 2A BBC spokesperson said: "In light of the BBC's savings challenges we have taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin-off show instead from producers South Shore." Right · 1The spin-off, DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life, will revisit successes from the show's past and, in the BBC's words, expand the brand "in a more cost-effective way next year".

Right · 1The Daily Mail links the decision to the BBC's widely publicised £500million savings plan. Right · 2The programme began in 1999 as a low-budget format fixing botched renovations. In 2010 it became DIY SOS: The Big Build, using local tradespeople and volunteers to transform homes for families facing serious illness or disability. Series 35 is currently airing. Right · 1A petition titled 'Prevent the cancellation of beloved BBC show DIY SOS' was launched by David Claydon, a self-employed plasterer who featured on the show in 2025. The Daily Express reported more than 41,000 signatures on 26 October, and over 43,000 the following day.

Right · 1The petition urges the BBC to "reconsider any plans to cancel" the programme, and signatories left comments calling it "One of the best shows on TV". Fans also commented on Knowles's Instagram post, some saying they were "gutted" and one suggesting a petition to move it to Netflix, Prime Video or Channel 4. Right · 1Knowles said earlier this month that they were "disappointed" but understood that "there's no endless pot of money at the BBC and sometimes they have to make difficult decisions". Right · 1Before the final episode, Knowles posted a tribute saying: "It's been a blast - it's been an honour - it's been emotional."

Right · 1In an Instagram video on Tuesday, Knowles said the show had been "shelved and not ended". Knowles said they had asked whether it would return in a form that builds whole houses or hospices, and been told no: any return would be "smaller and more cost effective". Right · 1Unnamed insiders quoted by the Daily Mail, partly citing The Sun, said Knowles and the team were "devastated", called the decision "a slap in the face", and feared the show would be permanently axed. The BBC's statement describes the show as rested rather than cancelled.

Leaves out or plays down
No independent detail on the BBC's wider savings plan or on what the spin-off's scale will be. The Mail and Express quote the BBC's statement but give little of the BBC's reasoning. Coverage is only from right-leaning outlets.
