The story, neutrally told

Centre · 1Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced temporary closures on Emirates Road (E611) and at the Al Maktoum International Airport Tunnel from 26 to 31 October to carry out highway testing for autonomous taxi companies. Centre · 2Three lanes of Emirates Road, opposite Al Maktoum International Airport, will be closed to vehicles, and the airport tunnel will be fully closed in both directions during the testing period. Centre · 2Gulf News, citing an RTA notice on social media, reports the closures run daily from 9am to 4pm; The National gives the hours as between 9am and 4am, which appears to be an error, since it also describes the closures as during peak hours.

Centre · 2The RTA urged motorists to plan journeys in advance and follow directional signs. Centre · 1The National places the closures in the context of Dubai's autonomous driving push: the Dubai Mobility Labs testing centre at Dubai Silicon Oasis, set up by the RTA with the Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority, assesses vehicles across 248 test scenarios, and trials there have included technology from WeRide, Pony.ai and Tesla. Centre · 1Dubai aims to make 25 per cent of all journeys autonomous by 2030, according to The National.

Centre · 1Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Dubai's Crown Prince, launched a commercial self-driving taxi network using Baidu Apollo Go cars in February, and Uber began operating Baidu's Apollo Go service in Dubai last month, initially in Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim, with plans to add thousands of vehicles.
